There’s something undeniably enchanting about Big Bear Lake in the crisp winter months. The snow-dusted pines whisper secrets to the wind, the lake mirrors the Sierra Nevada peaks like a flawless sapphire, and the air carries that perfect chill that makes every moment feel alive. As a Big Bear Lake photographer with over a decade of capturing love stories in this alpine paradise, I’ve seen my share of sunsets and starry nights. But nothing quite compares to the raw, electric joy of a proposal—especially when it’s unfolding right before your eyes, framed by the rugged beauty of our mountain haven.
Last weekend, I had the absolute privilege of documenting one such moment for the future Mr. and Mrs. Saleh, a couple whose love story reads like a rom-com script set against Big Bear’s timeless backdrop. They reached out a few weeks ago, the groom to be nervously typing out his plan: a surprise proposal at the lake’s edge, complete with a picnic, a playlist of their favorite songs, and that classic one-knee-down magic. As their proposal Big Bear Lake photographer, my role was simple—be invisible until the perfect shot, then immortalize the tears, the laughter, and the “yes” that echoed across the water.

We met at dawn on a Saturday. I had scouted the spot meticulously—a weathered driftwood log on the sandy shore near the marina, where the mountains rise like protective guardians. I arrived early, camera slung over my shoulder, blending into the landscape with my neutral-toned gear (pro tip for aspiring photographers: earth tones are your best friend in nature shoots).
The bride to be arrived blissfully unaware, bundled in a cozy striped cardigan and chunky suede boots that screamed “effortless chic.” The groom to be, ever the thoughtful one, had packed a thermos of hot cocoa spiked with marshmallows and a blanket embroidered with their initials. As they strolled hand-in-hand along the shore, chatting about everything from their first date to dream vacations, I hung back, framing compositions through my lens: the curve of her smile against the frosty treeline, his steady gaze as he stole glances at her.
The air was alive with anticipation. Ducks skimmed the water’s surface, and in the distance, the faint hum of snowboards carving down the slopes at Bear Mountain added a rhythmic soundtrack. Big Bear Lake isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling, and on days like this, it amplifies every heartbeat.

If you’re dreaming of popping the question in Big Bear, here’s why it’s unbeatable (and a few tips from your friendly local Big Bear Lake photographer):
For Sarah and Jordan, the aftermath was pure bliss—popping champagne (non-alcoholic, given the chill), dancing to Ed Sheeran on a portable speaker, and planning their wedding (hint: they’re eyeing a Big Bear ceremony next summer). As their proposal Big Bear Lake photographer, I snuck in a few portraits post-kiss, ensuring they have heirlooms for the mantel.
Proposals are my favorite— that split-second where vulnerability meets victory. If Big Bear Lake has stolen your heart too, let’s make magic happen. Whether it’s a sunrise elopement, a snowy surprise, or a lakeside vow renewal, I’m here to document it all. Reach out via my contact form or DM me on Instagram to chat details and availability.
