From Big Bear Lake to Rome: Becoming an International Wedding Photographer

Posted in: Uncategorized

Every photography journey has certain moments that feel bigger than the photo itself.

For me, this wedding in Rome was one of those moments.

What started as a connection here in Big Bear Lake came full circle thousands of miles away in Italy. I had the honor of photographing this couple’s proposal photos, capturing the beginning of one of the most important chapters in their lives. So when they asked me to photograph their wedding in Rome, it felt like more than just another booking.

It felt like being trusted with the next part of their story.

As a Big Bear Lake photographer, I have always loved capturing couples in places that feel meaningful. Big Bear has its own kind of magic — the lake, the mountains, the trees, the quiet moments that make a proposal or wedding feel personal. But traveling to Rome to photograph a couple I already had history with brought that same feeling into an entirely new setting.

This was the kind of wedding experience that reminded me why photography matters so much. It is not just about beautiful locations. It is about the people, the trust, the emotion, and the story that keeps growing.

Photographing a Wedding Story in Rome

Rome gave us one unforgettable backdrop after another.

We photographed in front of the Trevi Fountain, where the movement of the city surrounded them while they still had this calm, romantic energy between the two of them. There is something incredible about photographing a couple in a place so iconic, but still making the images feel intimate and personal.

From there, we found a red Volkswagen bus that added such a fun, unexpected pop of character to their gallery. It gave the session a playful, cinematic feel — the kind of little detail you cannot always plan for, but instantly makes the photos feel more alive.

We also photographed at a beautiful cafe in Rome covered with pink flowers. That spot felt soft, romantic, and timeless. The flowers, the architecture, the street energy, and the way they looked at each other made it feel like a scene from a love story.

And of course, we photographed near the Colosseum. Standing in front of one of the most historic places in the world while capturing a couple beginning their marriage was something I will never forget. The contrast of ancient history and a brand-new chapter made those images feel especially powerful.

From Proposal Photos to Wedding Photos

One of the most meaningful parts of this experience was that I was not meeting this couple for the first time on their wedding day. I had already photographed their proposal.

That changes everything.

When you photograph a proposal, you get to witness a couple in one of their most emotional and honest moments. You see the surprise, the nerves, the excitement, and the joy that comes right after the question is asked. So being invited back to photograph their wedding felt incredibly special.

It showed me how important it is to build real relationships with the couples I photograph. Sometimes a proposal session becomes more than one day of photos. Sometimes it becomes the beginning of a longer story — one that can lead from Big Bear Lake all the way to Rome.

A Big Bear Lake Photographer With a Passport

This wedding marked something new for me professionally, too.

Photographing a wedding in Rome allowed me to step into the role of an international wedding photographer, while still carrying the same heart and approach I bring to every session in Big Bear Lake.

Whether I am photographing a proposal by the lake, an engagement session in the mountains, an intimate wedding in Southern California, or a destination wedding in Italy, my goal stays the same: to create images that feel honest, emotional, and connected to the couple’s story.

Becoming an international photographer was not just about traveling to another country. It was about being trusted enough by a couple to follow their story across the world.

That is something I will never take lightly.

Why Destination Wedding Photography Feels So Special

Destination weddings have a different kind of energy. The couple, the location, the travel, the details, and the people all come together to create something that feels once-in-a-lifetime.

Rome gave this wedding a beautiful sense of romance and history. Every street had texture. Every corner had character. Every location added something different to the story.

The Trevi Fountain brought elegance and movement.
The red VW bus brought personality and fun.
The flower-covered cafe brought softness and romance.
The Colosseum brought history, scale, and timeless beauty.

Together, those locations created a gallery that felt like their relationship had been placed inside the heart of Rome.

Grateful for the Journey

This wedding will always mean a lot to me.

Not only because it took me from Big Bear Lake to Rome, but because it reminded me what this work is really about. Photography has a way of connecting people across seasons of life. One day, you are photographing a proposal. Later, you are standing in another country, camera in hand, documenting the wedding that came from that yes.

That is the kind of full-circle moment that stays with you.

I am so grateful this couple trusted me with both chapters of their story. From their proposal photos to their wedding photos in Rome, it was an honor to capture the love, emotion, and beauty of this journey.

From Big Bear Lake to the Trevi Fountain, from a quiet proposal to a wedding day in one of the most romantic cities in the world, this experience reminded me that photography can take you places you never expected — and sometimes, those places are even more meaningful because of the people who bring you there.
